James “Jay” Gioia was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Jay graduated from Alfred University in 2013 with a B.A. in Criminal Justice, whereafter he moved to Maine and began working as a paralegal at a Portland, Maine based law firm.
Jay went onto study law at the Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law in Ada, Ohio. During law school, Jay was a member of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team, which allowed him the opportunity to travel to Chicago to compete in the world’s largest moot court competition. During his final year in Ada, Jay practiced criminal law with the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office in Lima, Ohio where he gained valuable trial experience.
